Frequently Asked Question

Here you can find answers to the most common questions about buying, selling, and owning diplomatic vehicles in Austria. If you need further assistance, feel free to contact our team.

Are the prices listed on Diplocars inclusive of all taxes?

Yes. All prices displayed on Diplocars.at include the applicable taxes required for vehicle registration in Austria. This means the vehicles are ready for registration unless otherwise stated.

If a vehicle is listed without the Standard Consumption Tax (NoVA), it will be clearly indicated in the vehicle description.

Why are diplomatic vehicles often cheaper?

Diplomats often receive special conditions when purchasing vehicles in Austria, including the ability to buy vehicles without VAT due to diplomatic privileges.

Additionally, diplomats may receive discounts from manufacturers. As a result, these vehicles can often be sold at more competitive prices compared to standard market vehicles.

Are diplomatic vehicles different from regular vehicles?

In most cases, diplomatic vehicles are identical to vehicles sold on the Austrian market.

They are typically purchased directly from authorized dealers and maintained according to manufacturer specifications. Occasionally, some optional equipment packages may differ depending on the original purchase configuration.

Is the manufacturer warranty valid for diplomatic vehicles?

Yes. Diplomatic vehicles retain the full manufacturer warranty, just like any other vehicle purchased from an authorized dealer.

The warranty remains valid as long as the vehicle has been serviced according to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

Can I purchase a diplomatic vehicle using a VAT ID?

No. Because diplomats are exempt from VAT, VAT cannot be shown separately on the invoice when the vehicle is sold.

However, if the required holding period has passed or an exemption from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs exists, the vehicle can be sold without additional VAT payments in Austria.

Can diplomatic vehicles be financed or leased?

Yes. Diplomatic vehicles can usually be financed through leasing or financing companies, depending on the buyer’s eligibility and the financing provider’s terms.

Our team can assist you with available financing options.

Can the vehicle menu language be changed?

Yes. Most modern vehicles allow the menu language to be changed easily through the vehicle’s settings.

Navigation systems, dashboard displays, and other functions can typically be set to German, English, or other supported languages.

Do the vehicles come with German manuals?

Diplomatic vehicles are often delivered with English documentation, as many diplomats use English as their primary language.

However, German manuals can be obtained from authorized dealerships or service centers if required.

What is a “Dauersperre” (permanent restriction)?

A Dauersperre refers to a restriction placed on a vehicle that prevents it from being sold tax-free under certain conditions.

If a vehicle with a permanent restriction is sold, certain taxes or duties may need to be paid depending on:

  • the country of origin
  • whether the vehicle was imported from outside the EU
  • whether VAT or NoVA was originally exempted

These rules are regulated by Austrian and European Union tax laws.
